Recently a couple of my friends have asked, “Which Bible should I by my kids?”

What a great question! But there that leads me to 3 other questions to get to the heart of the matter…

Do you want them to read it now?

If that’s the case, then you should get something at their reading level

  1. God’s Story for Me (age 5-7)
  2. The Jesus Storybook Bible (age 6-8)
  3. The Story for Kids (age 6-10) - selections from the NIrV text organized like a non-fiction novel
  4. The Story (age 9+) - Most of the NIV text organized like a non-fiction novel.
  5. Adventure Bible NIrV (age 6-12)
  6. NIV Value Thinline Bible (age 10+) Also available in other colours
  7. NIV Study Bible (Age 12+)

Do you want to buy only one Bible for their whole lives?

Do you want to read it to them?

  1. God’s Story for Me (age 5-7)
  2. The Jesus Storybook Bible (age 6-8)
  3. The Garden, the Curtain, and the Cross (age 6-9) - not a Bible, but an amazing book
  4. The Story for Kids (age 6-10) - selections from the NIrV text organized like a non-fiction novel
  5. The Story (age 9+) - Most of the NIV text organized like a non-fiction novel
  6. NIV Value Thinlin Bible (age 10+) Also available in other colours

So how many Bibles should I buy throughout their lives?

That is totally up to you. At first, I thought that I would buy 1 Bible for each of my kids. But I changed my mind early in my parenting. I decided I wanted to read to them as much as I can. And I want them to begin to read the Bible at an early age and continue to read it.

If I buy 7 Bibles, isn’t that a lot of money on the Bible?

Yes. It is the best investment I’ve made. Period. What’s the financial limit you are going to put on your child’s discipleship? For me, I’ll spend whatever it takes to have fun and enjoy God’s Word. Although, buying the Adventure Bible wasn’t necessary for our family.

The most important purchase is probably The Jesus Storybook Bible and a complete NIV, and I like the NIV Value Thinline.

But there’s one thing more important than reading the Bible to your kids or encouraging them to read it themselves. YOU need to read YOUR Bible and MODEL a Christ-like faith of love. Parents and grandparents need to set the example. The good news is, studies show that it is essential for parents to read their Bibles and walk with God. In fact, it’s so important, that reading your Bible is what I like to call one of The Essentials of Authentic Faith.

I encourage you to head to your local Christian bookstore, look around at christianbook.com, or shop on Amazon. Keep up the good work.
